Empowering Futures: 2025 Northern California College Exposure Trip Inspires Our Youth

In the spring of 2025, eighteen students from the Salesian Family Youth Center embarked on an unforgettable journey through Northern California’s top universities, including UC Santa Barbara, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, CSU Monterey Bay, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. This College Exposure Trip was more than a visit—it was a hands-on experience designed to expand students’ horizons, deepen their understanding of higher education, and strengthen their confidence to pursue college.

A Transformative Experience

For many participants, this was their first time traveling outside the Los Angeles area, and for some, their first direct exposure to college campuses. Over three days, students engaged in guided tours, self-led exploration, and group activities that brought college life to life. They learned about admissions processes, financial aid options, academic programs, and student support services. Beyond academics, students enjoyed social bonding, sports, and cultural experiences that helped them imagine themselves as part of vibrant campus communities.

Eduardo Serrano shared his reflections, highlighting how the trip challenged him to step outside his comfort zone, build new friendships, and envision applying to prestigious universities like UC Berkeley. His story echoes the trip’s broader impact: inspiring young people to set ambitious goals and equip themselves with the knowledge to achieve them.

Key Outcomes

  • Increased Confidence and Motivation: Students rated their preparedness for college at an average of 4.2 out of 5 and expressed high overall satisfaction with the trip.

  • Expanded Knowledge: Participants gained valuable insights into financial aid, campus culture, housing, and academic support programs.

  • Strengthened College-Going Identity: Many students reported a clearer vision for their educational futures and an eagerness to engage with counselors and take steps toward college applications.

  • Memorable Experiences: From walking the Golden Gate Bridge to playing basketball with peers and chaperones, students built lasting memories and friendships.

Supporting Access and Opportunity

This impactful experience was made possible by the generous support of Southern California Edison and an anonymous Angel Donor. Their contributions covered transportation, lodging, meals, and campus fees—ensuring that financial barriers did not stand in the way of opportunity. The students themselves contributed $100 each to demonstrate commitment, with full sponsorship provided when needed.

Looking Ahead

The College Exposure Trip continues to be a powerful model for supporting first-generation and under-resourced students. Feedback from participants highlighted areas for growth, including longer trip durations and more structured campus access. We are committed to refining this program to maximize its impact.
